Andrzej Wróblewski is one of the most outstanding Polish painters of the 20th century: a great personality, a tragic character, an individual forced to make fundamental choices, and a witness of two totalitarian systems. But Wróblewski is also (or perhaps above all) an individual who inspired subsequent generations of artists for the last five decades. The authors of the book talk to artists representing different styles and generations: Wojciech Fangor, Jerzy Lewczyński, Mirosław Bałka, Jarosław Modzelewski, Marek Sobczyk, Ryszard Woźniak, Wilhelm Sasnal, Wojciech Bąkowski, Piotr Bosacki, Róża Litwa and Jakub Julian Ziółkowski. The conversations about Antrzej Wróblewski provide a point of departure for discussing the artists’ own practice, artistic philosophy, methods of work and turning points in their career. The volume concludes with the first published interview with Marta Wróblewska, the painter’s daughter.

From the preface by Piotr Bazylko and Krzysztof Masiewicz: “For most of the people we talked to the fragility and imperfection of the artist hurled into a storm of historical change was just as fascinating as his work. Seen from this perspective the figure of Wróblewski exposes — by means of contrast — a certain ‘lukwearmness’ of the art of our times. Perhaps it is for that very reason that many young artists find a part of ‘themselves’ in his work. (…) Who is Andrzej Wróblewski to us? Above all, he is the ‘founding father’ of figuration in contemporary Polish painting, one that connects generations, groups such as Gruppa, Ładnie, and Penerstwo. He’s the brightest star in the constellation of the stars of Polish painting. When you look at his works, everything else disappears”.
