Szapocznikow-Wróblewski-Wajda

24.06.2018

“Perspective of Adolescence. Szapocznikow – Wróblewski – Wajda.” in the Muzeum Śląskie in Katowice has never been shown before. The exhibition, whose originator and curator is Anda Rottenberg, looks at the work of three representatives of the “war-infected” generation: the painter Andrzej Wróblewski (1927–1957), the sculptor Alina Szapocznikow (1926–1973) and the film director Andrzej Wajda (1926–2016). The common element which connects their work are similar experiences related to the time and place of their adolescence: the Second World War in occupied Poland. What they witnessed and what they went through marked their lives and their work in a very singular way.

The exhibition comprises around 70 paintings, gouaches and drawings by Andrzej Wroblewski, from museums as well as private collections. Among them there are works such as Chauffeur, Execution, (Execution II, Poznań Execution), gouaches like (Bust), (Head in Red and Blue), (Conversation). Alina Szapocznikow’s work is represented by sculptures such as “Vowels” and “Untitled”. Andrzej Wajda’s work is shown through fragments of his fourteen films from 1955-2016 and photos, film posters and sketches.

The exhibition is open until 30 September.
